How to tell if pearl earrings are real

Pearls come in various shapes and sizes. Whether it is cultured or natural, there are various pearl shapes, colours, and sizes that might make you wonder which ones are real. The short answer: actually, all of them. For example, natural pearls are obtained from a specific type of oysters. In their own habitat, these oysters may make pearls by catching sand pieces. However, human intervention is often needed to get pearls from oysters.  While wild pearls are incredibly rare, almost all pearls in the market are cultured. However, it does not necessarily mean that your pearl earrings are fake. They are very much real, only produced with a little bit of human assistance.

Fake pearls, on the other hand, can be made out of glass, plastic, or other shells and have an entirely different touch, feel, and temperature compared to real pearls. These beads have a coating that makes them look like real pearls; however, fake pearl earrings have a really different feel to them. If the crafting is good, fake pearls can retain their shine and coating for a long time without getting peeled off.

To tell if your pearl earrings are real, you should always look for irregularities. Real pearls are not identical. They have subtle differences in terms of shape, size, and colour. Just like other gemstones such as jade and quartz, real pearls are naturally cold. They will warm up when they touch your skin and return to their own temperature when not worn. In addition, real pearls are usually heavier. Last but not least, real pearls do not have a uniform colour at all. They have different shades, which makes it easy to distinguish them from imitation pearls.

How to make pearl earrings

Pearl earrings are usually made from cultured pearls produced by pearl farmers as natural pearls are really hard to find. Given that pearl earrings are on the rise again, several pearl shapes, colours, and sizes are used to make earrings from pearls nowadays. In addition, pearls can be incorporated into different jewellery collections, which showcase the craftsmanship of Altınbaş Jewellery in different types of pearl earrings such as black pearl earrings and pearl gold earrings.

How to clean pearl earrings

You can clean your pearl earrings at home, but you should be incredibly gentle. Just like 22 carat gold earrings, pearl earrings are really delicate pieces of jewellery. To give a concrete example, pearl earrings have a silk thread that composes their outer surface. This silk thread should not be distorted at all. You can clean your pearl earrings with warm water and mild dish soap. However, unlike other pieces of jewellery, you should not soak them into water or try to brush them. If your pearl earrings have some stains or need a bit of polishing, you could gently wipe them with a clean cloth dampened with soap water. Then, you should remove the soap residue with another piece of cloth and let them dry.
